Hi all
I need a surgeon to look at my hands- mostly those stupid pesky wrists.
they hurt so very much!
Did you go through the GP or what?

When I kept insisting that all the pain in my feet wasn't just RA, they referred me to a podiatrist. He finally said it might be morton's neuroma but that the lumps in my feet were too bit so were probably bursars caused by the RA. Then saw specialist podiatrist who finally referred me to the orthapaedic surgeon. I was very lucky that his registrar was covering the day I went and he sent me for an MRI scan on my feet (apparently he got a telling off for this after because of the cost). Surgeon still didn't belive they were neuroma as so very large but said he was going to try to reduce the 'bursars'. Which after the op turned out to be neuroma all along and that was the reason I was in agony - took me 2 and half years . Seriously though Jenni - I think your rheumy should refer you. Hope you are managing ok and are feeling alright on the new drugs. Julie

I would have thought the rheumatologist would refer you, Jenni. It was my rheumy who said I`d need to see the ortho surgeon re my shoulder. I think it works faster if the rheumy does the referral. Take care, Kathleen x

hi Jenni,
I think either your GP or rheumy consultant can refer you. I found that my rheumy consultant had better knowledge of hand surgeons than my GP.

Either your rheummy or GP, Jenni. Can I suggest you do some research as to the best in the area and then ask for a referral to him/her.

funn you ask. i asked my gp today about who would assess my shoulder and hip now things have settled down (nastily) on the anti-tnf's. she said she would refer back to rheumatologist for re-increase in MTX. but that if i needed a surgeon, he would instruct her to refer to orthopods.
i sense the beginning of a mighty long run around.
i hope yours is quicker. insummary, formal answer seems to be: GP. in reality, ask everyone, EVERYONE.

Hi Jenni, i was referred to orthopaedic surgeon via rheummy. Mine specialises in hand/arm/shoulder surgery. All i can say is that my wrist surgery, although taking some function away has taken away alot of the pain in my wrists.
Good luck with your search.

I would imagine the rheumy will know the surgeons personally. They must work together.

Hi !
Seen GP- asked her re surgery,
she RANG my rheummy who advised and she has now used the choose and book system. I will be going to the private hospital but on the nhs.
Initially this is to assess things.
not sure what will come from it but I just dont have grip in my left hand but the pain. OH the pain in my hands in the mornings- YEEKS.
From other messages from people I understand it is best to try and do something while there is some bone etc to stick new bits onto.
we will see!
